Cape Town gets its own museum

One of the oldest buildings in Cape Town - fondly known as the Queen of Adderley Street - will be coming alive this month.
The Old Standard Bank Building was launched as the official Cape Town Museum yesterday.
The building's "finer details" made it one of the most beautiful in the country, Standard Bank's provincial head, Johan van Wyk, said.
"We are proud to be part of the city's past and future history. We hope that the Queen of Adderley Street will continue to serve people of Cape Town with dignity as she has done for more than 130 years," he said.
As the country marked the start of Heritage month, the departments of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Transport and Public Works announced the new museum yesterday.
Chief director of Cultural Affairs, Hannetjie du Preez, said the first branch of Standard Bank opened at the site on August 7, 1979.
"In the 20th century, technology was introduced to the Standard Bank building. Now in the 21st century the Standard Bank building has changed," she said.
Transport and Public Works MEC Donald Grant said it was "an the honour to host the new museum in Cape Town", in partnership with private sector.
Head of Transport and Public Works Jacqie Gooch said this was the first new museum that had been signed in the history of Cape Town. "I am enthusiastic about the vision to reflect the city as a whole in the Cape Town Museum."
