3 ways to make your rental feel like home on a budget

Category Newsletter: Article

We have all heard the saying, “there’s no place like home,” or “home is where the heart is.” However, if you are renting, you might not feel that this rings true, largely because the home does not belong to you. The good news is that there are ways to make it feel like your home, for however long you live there for.

Below are 3 practical tips to make your rental feel like a home:

1. Own your space: Use the space around you and fill it with the things you love. For example, invest in unique pieces of furniture that bring out your personality, such as an antique inspired rocking chair or trendy bar stools in the entertainment area. Use the walls around you as well, by hanging your favourite pictures of family and friends or filling up the space with artworks you love. By doing this, you will be investing in pieces that not only make your rental home feel like yours, but you will collecting pieces that you love and will be able to use for when you do move into a home you own.

2. Paint: Colours have an impact on the way we feel and the colours we love help bring out our personalities. As such, it makes sense to paint your rental home with colours that make you feel great. For this, you would need to consult with your landlord first to get the go ahead and reassure them that you will paint it back once you leave the home. If you are not allowed to then the second best option is to invest in temporary wallpapers.

3. Work on the landscape: A landlord might not want you to paint the interior of the home but they will certainly encourage you to work on the exterior, ie, the yard work. Landscaping can make your home feel much more homely and more inviting for you and your guests.

Remember that since you are living in a rental home for a certain amount of time, envision it as your home for that period and use the months or years you live in it to enjoy, relax and thrive.
